Vom Brewhaus Kennel Purchase Conditions
The popularity of the DD has grown quickly. I feel that this is both good and bad for the breed. To many DD's are being placed in the wrong hands of "Wanna Be Hunters" or "Occasional hunters". There is more to being a hunter than posting pictures on Facebook. There is a process to completing the task required for the DD to be a proficient hunter and a truly versatile dog. Many people start out with good intentions but quickly dissolve into the background when it comes time to complete the process of the breed certification, and the breed in whole suffers as a possible excellent DD is wasted. Instead of allowing his or her talents to be seen and possibly passed along genetically.
I will not sell a dog to this type of person. As a puppy buyer you are required to test the dog (VJP/HZP). This does
2 things:
1. It will give you a time line to train your dog.
2. It gives me (the breeder) feedback on that particular breeding to ensure I am doing it right.
It takes more than money to get a DD pup.
It takes obligation, commitment to the breed by testing and hunting your dog. I'll admit that the DD is not the dog for everyone.
Do your research of the breed before calling. Make sure that this is the breed that you want otherwise you are just simply wasting both of our time.
Prepare yourself for plenty of questions and be honest as I interview you. I will not sell you one of my dogs just from text messages
or emails. You have to call and talk to me.
Puppies are "placed not picked".
All puppies are placed in hunting homes only. Even in the same litter their coats can differ from long to short and even some wooly. If you
think about it we are with these puppies for 8-10 weeks. We can see the personalities evolve over the 8 weeks along with their attitudes. You simply can't
see any of that is you come to pick a pup. The majority of people that pick puppies are based off of emotion not common sense. Trust your breeder, they want
what is best for you and the puppy. Breeders have a network amongst themselves and we do talk to each other, so if you're looking for a status symbol or strictly
upland or strictly waterfowl please move on.
The VDD has a proven record of improving the breed with strict enforcement of breeding regulations and performance based on testing programs developed in Germany. Other organizations do not. While groups such as the AKC do not enforce any breeding regulations. The VDD will not certify any Drahthaar for breeding purposes that has hereditary faults such as bad bite, over aggressiveness, gun shyness, coat and others. The VDD strongly recommends that all dogs certified for breeding be certified to be free of hip dysplasia as well. All of our dogs used for breeding have passed their performance test and are all HD, OCD and ED free.
Puppies are $2,500 and require a $300 non-refundable deposit. I take 8 deposits per litter (4 male 4 female) others will be put on the call list if there are more than 8. If there are less than 8 your deposit will have priority in the next litter. VDD members will have priority over others.
Our goal is to breed quality hunting dogs that are easy to train, well-mannered with the family but have a strong desire to hunt. Otherwise known as an "on-off" switch. We do our best to choose dogs that meet these requirements and have mild temperaments. There is no much difference in house dogs verses kennel dogs as far as hunting goes. We feel that a dog that is kept with the family is a more well-rounded, calmer and better all around.
