Remember that the DD was designed to be a truly versatile hunting dog. Well over 100 years of dedicated breeding, testing and training have brought us to what it is today. The job description of the DD is impressive to say the least. They are expected to be as proficient in the field and forest as the pointing breeds and perform as well as the retrieving breeds in the water. The DD is just as much fur as they are feather. Meaning that they are just as capable of producing game both in the field, forest and water. Not to mention reliable blood trackers.

One common mistake people make is to take their dog to a trainer that doesn't specialize in versatile dogs. Most of these trainers are not familiar with the training and expectations of a versatile dog. There is much that goes into making the dog versatile and should start at an early age. Proper exposure to many things early on is the key. Introduction to bird and gun, water, blood tracking and using its nose to find game is essential.
